Russia: Moscow To Expand Trade Ties With North Korea

Moscow, 7 September 2003 (RFE/RL) -- A top Russian official said today that Moscow is planning to expand its trade ties with North Korea. The Interfax news agency quoted Konstantin Pulikovskii, Russia's presidential envoy to the Far East, as saying that Russia plans to export electricity to the Korean Peninsula as part of a plan to build an energy system in the Far East.

Pulikovskii made the remarks ahead of a four-day visit to North Korea, where he is expected to meet with its leader Kim Jong Il.

The Russian envoy is expected to discuss the crisis over Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program, as well as economic relations between the two countries.
