Iraq: U.S. Exonerates Soldiers In Shooting Of Iraqi Police

Baghdad, 25 September 2003 (RFE/RL) -- The U.S. military today cleared its soldiers of any wrongdoing in an incident two weeks ago that left nine Iraqi security men and a Jordanian guard dead from U.S. fire. Lieutenant General Ricardo Sanchez, commander of U.S. ground forces in Iraq, said an inquiry of the shootings in Al-Fallujah concluded that the soldiers "acted within the construct of their rules of engagement."

The U.S. military has apologized for the accidental deaths of the Iraqi policemen and the Jordanian guard, which triggered mass protests in Al-Fallujah earlier this month.

The military inquiry also exonerated its soldiers over an incident in Baghdad where they were accused of shooting dead two Iraqi policemen.
