Tatar Nationalists Launch Anti-Alcohol Campaign
The Chally branch of the moderate nationalist Tatar Public Center appealed to the top officials in Tatarstan to help stop the spread of alcoholism among the republic's citizens. The TPC statement said that the "Tatar people have a bad reaction to alcoholic beverages, because just like the American Indians and the people of Russia's north, they don't have any immunity against alcohol and quickly become addicted to it." Tatar TV noted in its report that the chairman of the TPC branch in Chally, Rafis Kashapov, used to sell vodka. Kashapov, however, reportedly left the vodka business several years ago.

Tatarstan's National Library will launch its Internet site on 7 August, an RFE/RL correspondent in Kazan reported. Book catalogues and library photos will be available at http://kitap.kcn.ru
