Son Of Slain Russian Pilot Illegally Ordered Into Military

ST. PETERSBURG -- The son of a deceased Russian air force pilot has been told to report to a military recruiting office in St. Petersburg, which rights activists say is illegal, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Anatoly Bashinov's son, Anatoly Anatolyevich Bashinov, was called from his university dormitory to the recruitment center by city police on December 1. Bashinov, the father, was posthumously decorated for his service.

Soldiers' Mothers of St. Petersburg Chairwoman Ella Polyakova said the police's calling up of Bashinov violates a law that states that children of fallen soldiers cannot be drafted into the military.

"In this case, we are calling for the enforcement of a law in favor of the family, and we are going to insist on [the family's rights]," Polyakova stressed.
