The sole survivor of a special operation in Kazakhstan’s northwestern city of Aqtobe has been found guilty of terrorism and murder and sentenced to 12 years in jail.
Ghabit Qurmanqul, who turned 18 while in custody, was wounded by security forces in Aqtobe in June.
His two associates were killed in the operation.
According to investigators, the three men murdered a police officer in the region prior to the operation.
Qurmanqul's trial was held behind closed doors.
Aqtobe and other cities and towns in western Kazakhstan have been the scene of numerous operations in which security forces have reported killing alleged Islamic extremists and terrorists.
The area has also seen an alarming number of explosions seemingly targeting the authorities.
