KAZAN -- The People's Union Alliance has said it will not participate in the upcoming parliamentary elections in the Russian republic of Tatarstan.

The head of Tatarstan's branch of the People's Union, Sergei Nikitin, told RFE/RL's Tatar-Bashkir Service that "the party cannot be a full player in the elections because it will not pass the necessary threshold to enter parliament."

Another party, Patriots of Russia, earlier decided to withdraw from the election campaign, saying that the current government has already decided which parties will be in the parliament.

Local branches of United Russia, A Just Russia, the Liberal-Democratic Party of Russia, and the Communist Party will take part in the elections for seats in Tatarstan's unicameral parliament on March 1.
