ALMATY -- The Almaty-Bishkek highway was closed today due to a blizzard that has stranded dozens of motorists, RFE/RL's Kazakh Service reports.
The highway is the major transportation route connecting Kazakhstan's largest city, Almaty, with Bishkek, the Kyrgyz capital.
Hundreds of vehicles are also backed up at a police blockade on the highway at the Kordai heights near the Kazakh-Kyrgyz border.
The snow and heavy winds from the blizzard have made visibility very poor.
Kazakh police are distributing food and warm drinks to drivers stuck on the highway as they try to clear it.
