MOSCOW -- Activists protesting the redevelopment of Moscow's historic Kadashi district say they have managed to stop construction work from proceeding, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Sergei Udaltsov of the opposition Levy Front (Left Front) movement told RFE/RL that the Moscow city prosecutor's office decided to suspend the permit to construct new buildings in the district pending a review of the case.

The construction company working in the district assured the activists that all building work in Kadashi will be stopped in the immediate future.

The activists have been protesting in Kadashi since May 24 to prevent the planned redevelopment. They argue that the demolition of old buildings and construction of new ones will damage Moscow's historic image and detract from the appearance of the district.
