Education Cited As Key To Reductions In Afghan TB

KUNAR, Afghanistan -- The head of the Health Department in Afghanistan's eastern Kunar Province says tuberculosis has been reduced by some 50 percent because of increased education about the disease.

Dr. Asadullah Fazli told RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan that a health center was established in 1990 and has treated thousands of tuberculosis patients over the years.

He said that the most important factor in fighting the disease has been a successful public-awareness campaign in Kunar.

Fazli emphasized that schools and educational institutes have played an active and very effective role in reducing the dangers of tuberculosis.
