DNIPROPETROVSK, Ukraine -- The mayor of a town in eastern Ukraine is under investigation for alleged financial crimes, RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service reports.

The Dnipropetrovsk Oblast prosecutor's office today launched the investigation into the activities of Viktor Litvishchenko, the mayor of Novomoskovsk.

The oblast prosecutor's office press service said Litvishchenko is suspected of signing illegal agreements on leasing land and the sale of commercial property, thereby defrauding the local administration of considerable sums of money.

If found guilty, Litvishchenko could be sentenced to up to 12 years in jail.
