Russian Protesters Hold 'Empty Pans' Demonstration

KIROV, Russia -- People in the Russian city of Kirov marked International Women's Day with a demonstration of "empty pans" to protest higher prices that make it difficult for them to buy enough food for their families, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Initially, about 100 demonstrators with pans, spoons, and bowls gathered in front of the city administration building on March 8 to protest the increase in prices while also claiming that their salaries have not been paid.

They said Russia's current leadership is preventing them from feeding their families.

The group then marched across the city center banging the pots and pans while more people joined the protest.

No city official came to talk to the protesters.
