Romania, Moldova Agree To Sign Key Treaties

CHISINAU -- The Moldovan and Romanian foreign ministers have jointly announced plans to resolve outstanding bilateral issues in 2009, RFE/RL's Moldovan Service reports.

Romania Foreign Minister Cristian Diaconescu said on a visit to Chisinau that he has agreed with Moldovan counterpart Andrei Stratan that the countries can sign a border treaty and a "treaty of friendship and cooperation" this year.

Romania has been hesitant to sign such agreements, and Chisinau has accused it of dragging its feet for "revisionist reasons." Moldova was part of Romania before World War II.

Diaconescu and Stratan also announced an agreement to open Romanian consulates in the Moldovan towns of Balti and Cahul, and reiterated his country's support for Moldova joining the EU.
