Son Of Tajik President Elected To Youth Union Post

DUSHANBE -- The eldest son of Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, Rustam Emomali, has been elected deputy chief of Tajikistan's Youth Union, RFE/RL's Tajik Service reports.

Tajikistan's Youth, Sport, and Tourism Committee head Malikshoh Nematov was elected head of the Youth Union at the special emergency meeting.

The Youth Union is the successor to the Soviet youth organization Komsomol.

Some observers consider the election of the 21-year-old Emomali as the official start of his political career, as the union can propose presidential candidates.

Emomali's election to the deputy post is also expected to improve the finances and prestige of the Youth Union.

Emomali, an economics school graduate of Tajik State University, is currently attending classes at Lomonosov Moscow State University. He is also an owner and key player of the Tajik first-division soccer team Istiqlol.
