UN Seeks Shelter For Afghan Returnees, Pakistani Refugees

KABUL -- The UN's refugee agency is currently working on finding shelter for several hundred refugee families returning to Afghanistan's eastern provinces from the violence in western Pakistan.

UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) spokesman Nadir Farad told RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan on January 19 that each returning family will be given assistance in building a single-room shelter.

He said more than 2,000 families have returned to Afghanistan in recent months and are in urgent need of shelter.

The UNHCR noted that many Pakistani families are also entering Afghanistan as refugees in an attempt to flee the violence.
