Man Shot Trying To Enter Armenian Parliament

Media reports in Armenia say an Armenian citizen armed with a knife was wounded by security guards while trying to forcibly enter the parliament building in Yerevan.

Police refused to comment on the March 22 incident in the National Assembly, saying a preliminary investigation was under way.

The man's condition is not known and it is not clear what was behind the incident.

In October 1999, a group of armed men entered the Armenian parliament and killed Prime Minister Vazgen Sarkisian, parliament speaker Karen Demirchian, five other high-ranking officials, and one journalist.

Based on reporting by Interfax, Panarmenian.net, and Hraparak.am

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
