A young man armed with an ax and a chainsaw has attacked people at a shopping center in Belarus’s capital, killing one woman and injuring another.

Officials told RFE/RL’s Belarus Service that the October 8 attack took place at the Europa shopping center in central Minsk.

Police later arrested the suspect, described as a 17-year-old man from Belarus.

They said surveillance video showed the attacker had brought the chainsaw and the axe to the shopping center in a guitar case.

Authorities said the wounded woman, who is 46 years old, was being treated at a hospital in Minsk after receiving ax blows to her chest and shoulder.

Police did not immediately comment on a suspected motive for the attack.
