Deadly Flooding Hits Balkans For Second Time This Year

Heavy rains have caused widespread flooding in large areas of the Balkans for the second time this year.

Reports early on August 7 said a 65-year-old man drowned in the western Serbian town of Banja Koviljaca when water flooded his home.

In Banja Luka, Bosnia, a car was swept away by fast-moving waters and the driver is still missing.

Roads have been washed out and at least two bridges along the Stira River were destroyed.

Thousands of homes have been flooded and rescue workers are still trying to reach people in the worst-affected areas.

The floods hit the same regions that were devastated by flooding in May when dozens of people were killed.

Work to repair the damage from the May floods had just started in areas that now are inundated with water once again.

Based on reporting by AP and AFP

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
