Iran’s intelligence minister has claimed that his agents prevented a planned Islamic State (IS) terrorist attack in the capital, Tehran.

Speaking on November 29, Intelligence Minister Mahmud Alavi said a "terrorist group" had been identified and "liquidated." He added that explosives had been confiscated.

Alavi gave no further information about the purported attack and did not identify the suspects.

Alavi also said an alleged high-ranking IS militant named Abu Ayesheh Kurdi had been killed somewhere near Iran's border with Iraq.

Shi'ite Iran is one of the main enemies of the Sunni IS terrorist organization. Iranian security officials regularly claim to have thwarted planned IS attacks in the country.

Based on reporting by dpa and ISNA

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
