Pakistani volunteers and locals carry the dead body of a protester past a burning car after gunmen opened fire on a rally in Karachi on May 22.
Unknown gunmen have opened fire on a rally in the center of Karachi, killing at least nine people and wounding some 30 others.

Some news agencies have put the casualty figures higher.

The attackers struck a political rally by the nationalist Awami Tehrik group, and the violence sparked rioting that led to the burning of several shops and cars.

The violence comes hours after the Pakistani Navy announced it had court-martialed three officers for "negligence" in connection with a Taliban attack on a Karachi naval base in May 2011 that left 10 dead.

About 18 million people live in Karachi, Pakistan's largest city and commercial hub.
