Kyrgyz Mine Employee Arrested In Armed Gold Robbery


Police in Kyrgyzstan have arrested a gold mine employee who is suspected in an armed robbery in which at least five kilograms of gold were stolen.

Masked assailants shot a security guard, leaving him gravely injured, and beat two others in the attack on the Fonta gold mining corporation in southern Kyrgyzstan's Jalal-Abad region on September 7.

Investigator Temirlan Mavlyanov told RFE/RL that a 33-year-old mine employee who has a criminal record had been arrested on September 10.

He said the employee had confessed and that police were searching for two men he named as accomplices.

Police were also seeking to recover the stolen gold, worth about $200,000.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
