A plane from Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry has departed Ghana after picking up the chairman of Russia's Supreme Court and several other Russians injured in a traffic accident in that African country earlier this week.

The Russian plane was expected to land in Moscow later on September 18 with Supreme Court Chairman Vyacheslav Lebedev and the other injured officials aboard.

The plane has medical personnel and equipment aboard to allow for the treatment of the injured.

Lebedev’s convoy was traveling near the town of Tsito in the southeastern Volta region late on September 16 when reports say a truck suddenly veered into its lane.

Lebedev was in Ghana to address a meeting of the Ghana Bar Association in the city of Ho, some 160 kilometers from the Ghanaian capital, Accra.

Based on reporting by ITAR-TASS and Interfax

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
