WATCH: LGBT Rights Activists Rally In Chisinau

CHISINAU -- Some 150 people attended a gay-rights march in central Chisinau on May 17.

The officially sanctioned march by lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) rights activists was also met by a group of people protesting against gay rights.

Orthodox groups were among the organizers of the counterdemonstration, whose participants jeered the marchers.

A heavy police presence prevented the protesters from disrupting the march, which was also attended by the Swedish and American ambassadors in Chisinau.

The counterdemonstrators threw firecrackers and eggs at the LGBT activists taking part in the march.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
