Pakistan Army Launches 'Comprehensive Operation' In North Waziristan

Pakistan's military has announced the start of what it called a "comprehensive operation" against militants in the North Waziristan tribal area.

The Pakistani army said in a statement on June 15 the country's armed forces "have been tasked to eliminate these terrorists…along with their sanctuaries."

Pakistan's military has been carrying out air strikes on suspected militant hideouts in the tribal areas along the Afghan border since last month.

The official announcement of the offensive came the same day Pakistani fighter jets launched attacks on eight suspected militant sanctuaries in North Waziristan, killing dozens of militants.

The strikes were launched after "confirmed reports of the presence of foreign and local terrorists in these hideouts who were linked in planning of the Karachi airport attack."

The June 8 attack on the Karachi international airport that left 38 people dead, including 10 militants, was claimed by Pakistan's Taliban and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan.
