Pakistani Police Injured By IED Blast In Swat Region

Five police officers were reported wounded when their vehicle hit a land mine in northwestern Pakistan on July 12.

A police official in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province's Swat region told RFE/RL's Radio Mashaal that the police drove over an improvised explosive device in the Mankial area and that all five police officers in the vehicle were wounded.

The condition of some unidentified civilians riding in the vehicle was not immediately known.

In a statement sent to Radio Mashaal, Mohammad Khurasani, a purported spokesman of the Pakistani Taliban, claimed responsibility for the blast.

Pakistani security forces have been fighting a campaign against Muslim extremist groups in northwestern Pakistan and areas along the Afghan border for nearly two years, with thousands of people being killed on both sides.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
