Osama bin Laden was killed inside the compound by U.S. forces in a daring cross-border raid launched from Afghanistan in May 2011.
Reports in Pakistan say that authorities have begun demolishing the former compound of Osama bin Laden in the northern town of Abbottabad.

Pakistani TV channel Geo TV says the demolition of the compound began late on February 25.

Sources in the area said in the early hours of February 26 that half of the compound had already been destroyed.

The roads leading to the compound were sealed and public entry to nearby areas was prohibited.

The reason behind the demolition is unclear.

The compound has been a painful reminder for Pakistan, which was embarrassed by the unilateral U.S. operation that killed the world's most wanted fugitive just a short distance away from one of Pakistan's most prestigious military academies.
