Two volunteers working for a polio vaccination campaign have been shot dead by gunmen in northwest Pakistan.

The June 16 attack is the latest in a series of deadly attacks on polio-eradication teams in the region.

It took place on the second day of the vaccination program in the district of Swabi, in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Province.

The district police chief said the health workers, both male, were not accompanied by security personnel.

Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nigeria are the only three countries where polio remains endemic.

Pakistani militant groups oppose the vaccinations and accuse health workers of spying for the United States.
