Russia To Propose Athletes Compete Under Different Banner Than Russian Flag

Russia will ask the world athletics body to allow its athletes to compete in upcoming events under a different banner than the Russian flag to circumvent a ban on their athletics federation.

Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko made the remark at a news conference in Moscow on November 15.

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) suspended the Russian Athletics Federation (ARAF) on November 13 following allegations of widespread and state-sponsored doping.

Russia has since announced a three-month plan to clean up its act and ensure its athletes can compete at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Mutko said the Sports Ministry would ask the Russian Olympics Committee (ROC) to apply to the IAAF and the International Olympics Committee (IOC) to request that Russian athletes compete under an ROC flag.

Based on reporting by Interfax and Reuters

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
