A delegation from Russia's upper house of parliament has begun a two-day visit to Iran, led by the Federation Council’s speaker, Valentina Matviyenko.

The group arrived in Tehran on November 13 for a series of meetings with Iranian politicians, including parliament speaker Ali Larijani.

Matviyenko told reporters in Tehran on November 13 that Russia appreciated Iran's cooperation in Syria -- where Russian and Iranian forces have both been supporting the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad battle both moderate opposition fighters and extremist Islamic militants.

Matviyenko in Tehran expressed Moscow’s appreciation for Iran’s cooperation in fighting international terrorism.

She said both countries had similar positions "on many international and regional issues."

The Russian delegation was expected to discuss expanding economic ties, regional cooperation, and ways to help implement bilateral agreements signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Hassan Rohani in August.
