Russian Security Forces Say Two Criminals Killed In Daghestan

Russia’s National Counterterrorism Committee (NAK) says a security operation in the North Caucasus republic of Daghestan has resulted in the deaths of two members of a local criminal group.

The information center at the NAK said on April 24 that security forces were tipped off that two militants were in the village of Sogratl in Daghestan’s Gubin district.

Security forces blocked off access to the building the armed men were in and called on them to surrender.

The two men reportedly “fired indiscriminately” and were killed when security forces returned fire.

They men have been tentatively identified as Gajimurat Khabibov, born in 1986, and Suleiman Gajiomarov, born in 1991, both members of the Kadar criminal group.

Daghestan, along with other Russian republics in the North Caucasus, continues to be unstable due to the presence of Islamic militants and criminal groups.

Based on reporting by Interfax and ITAR-TASS

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
