Police in Moscow have detained nationalist activist Dmitry Demushkin on charges of posting to social media a video containing a symbol of the banned Slavyansky Soyuz (Slavic Union) organization.

Demushkin was detained on September 11 and will be brought to court to face administrative charges in connection with the video.

On August 12, the Moscow prosecutor's office asked a court to declare Demushkin's current organization, Russkiye (Russians), an extremist organization.

Officials accuse the organization of advocating violence against people of non-Russian ethnicity and of calling for the overthrow of the government and the establishment of a "national state."

Earlier, Demushkin predicted that he might be arrested in the run-up to the court's hearing of the Russkiye case.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
