A Russian-operated ship carrying a "dangerous cargo" has reportedly sailed for Syria after being temporarily halted in Cyprus.

Reports quoted an unnamed source at the vessel's St Petersburg-based firm as saying the ship was headed to Syria.

But the source also declined to comment on Russian and Cypriot media reports that the ship was carrying cargo from Russia's state weapons exporter, Rosoboronexport.

On January 12, the European Union said it was aware of the case, and that national authorities are responsible for making sure an EU arms embargo against Syria is upheld.

Russia has long been a major arms supplier to Syria, where President Bashar al-Assad’s regime has been trying to crush antigovernment protests, raising an international outcry.

Moscow has refused to join Western and Arab sanctions against Damascus.
