Earthquake Destroys Dozens Of Homes In Tajikistan

Dozens of homes have been destroyed by an earthquake in Tajikistan, although no injuries or deaths have been reported.

Tajikistan's state emergencies committee said the 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck in the remote Rasht region, located 200 kilometers from the capital, Dushanbe, on July 1.

Authorities in Rasht said a full assessment of the damage is still being carried out.

The mountainous Central Asian nation is prone to regular natural disasters, including landslides and earthquakes.

Last week in neighboring Kyrgyzstan, a stronger quake of 6.7 magnitude struck close to the countries' shared border, according to the Kyrgyz Emergency Services Ministry, but did not cause damage or casualties.
