U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and EU foreign-policy chief Catherine Ashton are expressing concern over political trends in Ukraine ahead of general elections.
Clinton and Ashton have published a joint opinion piece in the "International Herald Tribune" newspaper.
The two say they are "concerned about reports of the use of administrative resources to favor ruling party candidates and the difficulties several media outlets face."
They also wrote about the need to address "selective prosecutions, including the case of former Prime Minister Yulia V. Tymoshenko and other former senior officials."
The elections on October 28 are the first national vote since President Viktor Yanukovych defeated Tymoshenko in a 2010 presidential election.
Last year, she was sentenced to seven years in prison on abuse-of-office charges.
