Ukraine Probe Launched Into Murder Of Azerbaijani Congress Leader

DONETSK, Ukraine -- Authorities in Ukraine’s eastern city of Donetsk say they have launched an investigation into the murder of the leader of the local ethnic Azerbaijani community.

Reports say Igbal Makhmudov, 35, chairman of the Azerbaijani Congress organization in Donetsk Oblast and a well-known businessman, was shot dead by an unknown assailant in the town of Makiivka on May 9.

He was reportedly on his way to a meeting with veterans of World War II, as the anniversary of the end of the war in Europe was marked.

Witnesses say the attacker shot Makhmudov five times as he was leaving his car near a restaurant.

Reports say the assailant and an accomplice left the scene on a motorcycle.

Police have declined to comment on a possible motive, citing the ongoing investigation.
