DNIPROPETROVSK, Ukraine -- Several political parties in the eastern Ukrainian city of Dnipropetrovsk commemorated the country's Constitution Day by unfurling what is thought to be the world's largest national flag, RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service reports.

The organizers of the event on June 28 hope their flag -- which measures 30 by 45 meters and is half the size of a football field -- will beat the Guinness world record for the largest flag in the world.

The light blue and yellow flag was sewn by a Donetsk seamstress and has already been displayed in several Ukrainian cities.

Several hundred people turned out for the unveiling in Dnipropetrovsk's opera square and it took some 100 people to unfold it.

"Despite all efforts to divide Ukraine into east and west, this flag is the only thing that can unite us," said Anatoliy Sokorynskyi, one of the organizers of the event in Dnipropetrovsk.

"This is the largest flag in the world. So far a Greek flag measuring 600 square meters holds the record [but]...our flag is 1,350 square meters, it is twice as big," said Oleksandr Sokolyk, a co-host of the event on June 28, who hopes the Ukrainian flag will beat all others and be declared the biggest.

The organizers of the project have submitted their flag to the Guinness Book of World Records for a ruling.

A national flag in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku has been recognized as the largest mounted flag in the world, as it is attached to a flag pole. The Ukrainian flag is held by dozens of volunteers but is not mounted.
