Uzbek Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov has warned the UN General Assembly that "tough problems" may arise following the departure of international forces from Afghanistan in 2014.
He told the assembly on September 28 that: "Today it becomes obvious that such developments may lead to the rise of a standoff between confronting forces in Afghanistan itself and around it, the growth of extremism and radicalism, a further surge in drug trafficking, and aggravation of tension in the whole region."
Kamilov called for the establishment of a contact group under the auspices of the United Nations involving the countries neighboring Afghanistan as well as the United States, NATO, and Russia.
He said the goal should be to broker an accord between opposing forces in Afghanistan and to form "a coalition government representing the principal ethnic-national and religious groups of Afghanistan."
