Ukraine's prosecutor-general has announced that jailed former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko has been named a witness in the investigation of the 1996 murder of lawmaker Yevhen Shcherban.
Prosecutor-General Viktor Pshonka declined to say why investigators want to question Tymoshenko, who in 1996 headed United Energy Systems of Ukraine, about the shooting murder of Shcherban, his wife, and two associates in Donetsk.
The May 30 announcement came as about 100 opposition activists gathered in Kyiv to mark the 300th day of Tymoshenko's incarceration and to call for her release.
Tymoshenko was arrested in August 2011 and sentenced in October to seven years in prison for abuse of power in connection with gas deals signed with Russia when she was prime minister.
Tymoshenko's supporters say the cases against her are politically motivated.
