Kyrgyz Court Upholds Pretrial Arrest Of Opposition Leaders

BISHKEK -- The Bishkek City Court has upheld the two-month pretrial detention of three opposition members of parliament.

Kamchybek Tashiev, Sadyr Japarov, and Talant Mamytov -- who are leaders of the opposition Ata-Jurt (Homeland) party -- were detained and charged with stirring public unrest for their role in violent protests by about 1,000 demonstrators in Bishkek on October 3.

Some 100 supporters of the arrested politicians protested the court's ruling in front of the Bishkek City Court's building and marched toward the parliament, demanding the opposition leaders' immediate release.

At least 200 demonstrators protested in Kyrgyzstan's southern city of Jalal-Abad on October 17, threatening to block a major highway in the region unless Tashiev, Mamytov, and Japarov are freed.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
