Kazakhstan 'Needs European Cooperation' In Fight Against Online Extremism

Kazakhstan's Committee for National Security (KNB) says it needs more cooperation with European countries to combat online extremism and terrorist propaganda.

KNB deputy chairman Kabdulkarim Abdikazymov told journalists on November 14 that some 950 websites promoting extremist and terrorist views have been shut down by Kazakh courts since last January.

According to him, 150 more sites are under review for bans.

However, according to Abdikazymov, the majority of those websites are based in Europe and Kazakh authorities need European cooperation.

Abdikazymov added that the KNB has sent special recommendations on the issue to the parliament.

Local security forces have launched several antiterrorist operations in the west of the country after Kazakhstan's first-ever suicide bombing in the city of Aqtobe in May 2011.

Based on reporting by KazTAG and Interfax

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
