Russia, the world's second-largest weapons exporter, has granted a $1 billion loan to Bangladesh for purchases of Russian weapons.

President Vladimir Putin announced the loan after talks with the Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Moscow on January 15.

Putin did not say what kind of military equipment Bangladesh wants to buy from Russia. Moscow would also provide a separate $500 million loan to help the South Asian country build its first nuclear power plant.

Construction of the plant by Russia's state atomic energy corporation, Rosatom, is to start in early 2014.

The plant is to have two 1,000 megawatt reactors and will be built in Ruppur, around 200 kilometers northwest of the capital Dhaka.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
