Powerful Earthquake Hits Off Russian Far East

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) says a 6.9-magnitude earthquake has hit off Russia's far eastern Kamchatka peninsula.

The USGS said on its website that the quake struck 85 kilometers southeast of the town of Ozernovskiy at a depth of 52 kilometers.

Russian officials said there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, and that no tsunami warning has been issued.

The arc formed by the Kamchatka peninsula and the Kurile Islands between Russia and Japan is one of the most seismically active areas in the world.

Based on reporting by Reuters and AFP

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
