Police say gunmen have shot dead a female TV presenter in northern Iraq.

Nawras al-Nuaimi is reportedly the fifth journalist to be killed in the country in recent months.

She worked for Al-Mosuliyah, a local TV station. She was killed near her home in Mosul on December 15.

Meanwhile, a series of bombings and attacks in and around the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, killed at least 47 people on December 16.

The deadliest single attack was in the northern city of Mosul, where militants gunned down 12 people on a bus.

Five car bombs and a magnetic "sticky bomb" on a vehicle exploded in and around the Iraqi capital, killing at least 17 people and wounding at least 43 -- the second series of blasts in the area in 24 hours.

Suicide bombers attacked a police station in the town of Baiji, in Salah al-Din Province. Eight people -- attackers and security forces -- died in the attack and subsequent fighting.

Also, gunmen killed three soldiers guarding an oil pipeline in Tikrit, northwest of Baghdad.

And at least seven Shi'ite pilgrims were shot dead by unidentified gunmen on a bus in northern Iraq.

Violence has been on the rise in Iraq this year. At least 214 people have died in attacks across the country so far this month, according to an Associated Press count.

The country has come in for repeated criticism over shortcomings in media freedom, and ranks first in the Committee to Protect Journalists' Impunity Index, which tracks unsolved murders of journalists.
