On May 13, during a visit to Moldova, Van Rompuy invited Chisinau to sign its own Association Agreement with the bloc on June 27.

In a speech after talks with Moldovan Prime Minister Iurie Leanca, Van Rompuy reiterated that Moldova belongs in Europe "by history, by geography, by its way of life, by culture."
