The Pakistani military says warplanes targeted alleged militant strongholds in Pakistan’s North Waziristan region.

The Pakistani military claims an unspecified number of alleged Uzbek and local insurgents were killed in the air strikes on July 5.

In a statement, the military said its jets targeted sites in Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan, and the village of Boya after Pakistani troops came under fire.

The Pakistani military has launched an operation in North Waziristan along the border with Afghanistan to clear all militants from what is considered to be the stronghold of groups such as the Pakistani Taliban, the Haqqani network, and the Afghan Taliban.

The Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, an Al-Qaeda affiliate, has also had a large presence in Pakistan's tribal belt since the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.
