KABUL -- Afghanistan said at the opening of the United Nations' Global Campaign for Education on April 22 that mosques will be used to promote education in the country, RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan reports.

The campaign aims to eliminate adult illiteracy.

Afghan Deputy Education Minister Sarwar Hosaini said this week is a good occasion "to ensure that every person has a high-quality education in Afghanistan" and that education will be promoted in mosques.

He said in 2010 more than 1,000 mosques will be covered under a new national educational program.

Kai Eide, the UN special representative in Afghanistan, pledged at a ceremony marking the beginning of the campaign to continue to help the Afghan people.

The Global Campaign for Education is marked in some 112 countries.
