Karzai's relations with his U.S. allies have been strained in recent months.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai has arrived in Washington on a four-day visit, in the wake of recent public spats between the two sides on governance and corruption.

Karzai is to attend a dinner hosted by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton later today before sitting down for talks with her on May 11.

The discussions will set the stage for Karzai's talks with President Barack Obama on May 12.

The visit is Karzai's first since he infuriated Washington with a string of outspoken allegations that foreign nations had orchestrated fraud in the elections that returned him to power last year.

In a recent report, the U.S. Defense Department blamed government corruption and inefficiency as major reasons for the Afghan people's distrust of the authorities.

With the United States sending thousands more troops to Afghanistan, both sides have stressed the importance of the visit.
