KABUL -- A group of political activists in Afghanistan have called for transparency in the electoral process and urged the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) to stay unbiased in the process, RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan reports.
The activists, who are supporters of presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah, gathered in front of UNAMA offices in Kabul and delivered a letter criticizing Kai Eide, the UN's special representative to Afghanistan.
The letter accused Eide of "meddling in the internal affairs of Afghanistan."
UNAMA did not respond to the criticism.
But UNAMA spokeswoman Nilab Mubarez told Radio Free Afghanistan that UNAMA is not supporting any particular candidate in the Afghan presidential election but is supporting the electoral process in general.
Preliminary results showed incumbent President Hamid Karzai with slightly more than 50 percent of the vote, but amid claims of widespread fraud.
The final result is expected to be announced soon after investigations by Electoral Complaint Commission have been resolved and a partial recount of suspicious ballots has been completed.
