Another child offender is facing execution in Iran, Radio Farda reports. A lawyer for Bahman Salimian told Radio Farda that his client is due to be executed on February 9.
Bahman Salimian is now 27, but has spent a decade in prison for a crime he committed when he was 15.
The EU and right groups have repeatedly expressed concern about the executions of child offenders in the Islamic Republic. Iran has one of the highest execution rates in the world; the EU and human rights groups have repeatedly called on Tehran to abolish the death penalty altogether and its use on minors in particular.
Most recently, the European Union strongly condemned last week’s execution of juvenile offender Molla Gol Hassan, an Afghan national.
Gol Hassan, who was convicted for a crime he committed when he was 17 years old, was among 10 prisoners who were hanged in a mass execution at Tehran’s Evin Prison on January 21.
