Anthrax Reported In West Kazakhstan

AKBULAK, Kazakhstan -- A 59-year-old woman in the village of Akbulak in Kazakhstan's west has been diagnosed with anthrax, RFE/RL's Kazakh Service reports.

Five more inhabitants of that village have been hospitalized with anthraxlike symptoms.

Some 185 individuals who had contacts with the hospitalized villagers are being monitored by doctors.

Three more patients with anthraxlike symptoms were hospitalized in the region’s town of Volodarka on June 18.

Health officials are working in the region.
