WANA, Pakistan -- At least 21 people were killed today -- including a prominent former member of Pakistan's parliament -- by two separate explosions in Pakistan's South Waziristan and Kurram tribal districts, RFE/RL's Radio Mashaal reports.

RFE/RL's correspondent in Wana, the capital of the South Waziristan district, reports that a suicide bomber attacked a mosque in the city while students were being taught from the Koran.

The explosion killed 16 people and injured more than 30.

Among the dead was former legislator Maulvi Noor Mohammad.

Earlier today, an explosion ripped through a school in the village of Khomsa in the Kurram tribal agency during a meeting of tribal elders -- killing five people and injuring 10 others.

The area is known for clashes between Shi'ite and Sunni Muslims.
